Varkala Municipal area stretches About 1 Km along the shores of the Arabian Sea for a distance of 1 km, offering immense scope for the development of fisheries as an important source of earning foreign exchange. Varkala, Anchuthengu, are the two major fishing centers. In coastal area most of the people associated with fishing related activities. Sree Ganesh industries, Heera Nail Industries, Revathy Ricks and Stone Industry,Sarath Hawaies, MAR Industries etc are some other  production units in industrial sector.

Varkala is the only place in southern Kerala where one can find cliffs adjacent to the Arabian Sea.  This tertiary sedimentary formation cliff is a unique geological feature and is declared as a geological monument by the Geological survey of India. There are numerous water spouts and spas on the sides of these cliffs. Sea shore from varkala is very attractive and beautiful. Along with the long sea shore, there are cliffs, valleys, plain lands, and paddy fields. Most of the municipal region is of middle land nature.
